The Protagonist

The given Protagonist - Lucy May Schofield, a lady of many professions, many talents but an ungiven title. My blog will be based on gathering information (research) in order to create a space for her work and maybe even Lucy herself. Hopefully through looking at my online diary of daily findings you will be able to understand why i perceive her work the way i do, without describing her job role.

Final model pictures I have taken to show my design finished. My model is at a scale of 1:20 and shows seating plans, book storage embedded into the clay walls as well as on the trees (to get the books off the trees to read you climb the ladder shown and cut the string) there is also a seperate log seating area for people who want to read to themselves.

my space

These pictures are off my banner to show plans, sections and sketches of my finished therapy space I have also included google maps images to show where my designed space will be (the gardens inbetween university on Oxford road)

the above picture is a sketch of how my seats would look. I decided that using trees inside my space would be better and give off a more pure/nicer feeling as well as using less materials for seats, carving them into the trees allowing the person to sit inside the tree would make them feel more part of nature.

Andy Goldsworthy Yorkshire sculpture park

The top five pictures are not from Andy Goldsworthy's work but fitted in with the theme material wise. I liked the idea of the bakerloo style seating but it did not fit in with the type of materials i wanted to use. I have still chosen to use the idea of using a small screen though just to prevent intimidation whilst reading to other people.

the pictures below are of Andy Goldsworthy work at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, my firend who had visited the park suggested his work to me as she thought his style of work was relevant to my rersearch. I looked up some of his work and became really interested especially in his "clay room" walls, made of clay obviously. I like the way they have been left to dry naturally and how the light has made them crack, clay is also a natural material that Ive worked with before so i thought this would be a good idea to try.

seating - the bakerloo line

In my sketchbook I have this same picture of the Bakerloo line train seats. The air transfers as you sit down on the seats making the other person jump up slightly. I thought that therapy itself was intimidating because of the fact that you are face to face whilst talking. So the idea came up for this type of seating maybe by having a screen between each person and instead of eye contact you would know the other person was there simply by sitting down.

the pathway to bibliotherapy

I mentioned earlier in my blog that I was thinking of making a transient space for Lucy, but as my research took a different turn as well as my actual work did over a period of time, my plan now is to create a permanent Bibliotherapy space instead. Below are some of my ideas of feeling/being in a natural space made out of natural materials. I wanted to create this space in a city because this seems to be where most people are stressed, putting a natural relaxing garden type space where people can read alone or to eachother in the middle of the city seemed like an ideal place.(these pictures are taken in my local park).

HAYLEYS BIBLIOTHERAPY

This is my video for my designed space. It is more of a narrative of feelings and an abstract way of showing what it would be like before entering(stressed, dark chaotic)and then the journey from that to being inside my space, of using books as therapy and after reading or leaving the space(refreshed, calm and at ease, almost dream like). This is all done without giving away what my final design would be.

Bitter Sweet Symphony by The Verve

I thought this was an interesting song after I watched Cruel Intentions. I like the words and the fact it starts quite dark then lifts into light, almost like a journey from one to another.
